TRIPTYCH OF MASSIVE GEOMETRIC SCULPTURES LIGHT NIGHTLY AT SUNDOWN AND IS PART OF THE CITY’S “ART ON THE OUTSIDE” PUBLIC ART PROGRAM
WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA, December 3, 2014: On Saturday, December 6, the City of West Hollywoodwill host an artist reception for Shana Mabari and ILLUMETRIC, her triptych of massive illuminated diamond-, cube-, and rectangle-shaped acrylic sculptures on the median of the 8400 block of Santa Monica Boulevard. ILLUMETRIC is presented by West Hollywood’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission as part of the “Art On The Outside” program, which brings art into the public realm to highlight West Hollywood’s pedestrian-friendly culture.
The reception for Mabari takes place 4-6PM at Sal Guarriello Veterans’ Memorial Park (at the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd. and Holloway Drive), which adjacent to the Diamond and Cube pieces. It is culmination of the Arts and Cultural Affairs Commissions’ “Meet The Artists” art tour also featuring a stop at Wang Dalong’s “The Game” at West Hollywood Park (2-4PM). Seasonal refreshments will be served; no RSVP is necessary.
Internal LED illumination for all three of ILLUMETRIC’s brightly hued geometric pieces switches on nightly at sundown, creating an interactive engagement with the surrounding neighborhood. In a “Culture Monster” story, the Los Angeles Times reported, “Mabari, who hails from the Fairfax district, said in a recent interview that the installation is ‘a study of color, geometry, light and scale.’”
The ILLUMETRIC installation is a dynamic expression of Mabari’s interest in exploring the intersections of art, science, and technology. Mabari and her work continue the legacy and influence of the Light and Space movement that originated in California in the 1960s. Legendary Southern California fabricator Jack Brogan consulted Mabari extensively on preliminary fabrication and design for ILLUMETRIC.
Shana Mabari is currently creating new two- and three-dimensional work in her Los Angeles studio. Seven of her pieces are also on display at Imago Galleries in Palm Desert, CA (40-450 Highway 74, 92260), included in an exhibition running into January 2015.
